Scalp treatments are sexy. Just ask Good Housekeeping, Health, and Best Products!
Scalp scrubs specifically have been a hot topic that certified trichologist and Advanced Trichology founder William Gaunitz, FWTS, has been asked about multiple times.
So what exactly is a scalp scrub? Gaunitz defines it as a product that is designed specifically to exfoliate the scalp, eliminate excess oil, and break down dead skin cells and residue on the surface of the scalp that can be removed.
Not everyone needs a scalp scrub though. If you’re experiencing flaking on the scalp, itchiness, redness, and irritation closer to the front hairline, or extreme oil production, then you could benefit from using a scalp scrub. A monthly application and cleansing utilizing the scalp scrub should be sufficient to help illuminate excessive buildup on the scalp.
A healthy scalp has a balanced scalp microbiome that should not be disrupted. So, if none of the above apply to you, it’s best to skip the scrub.
If you are moving forward with a scalp scrub, wash your hair, and rinse, then apply the scalp scrub through your part line and with a circular motion massage in. You do this throughout the entire scalp, massaging each area for 3 seconds. Afterward, you can rinse your scalp and apply a natural, hydrating, chemical-free conditioner.
