Can Alkaline Water Actually Help Your Hair Grow?

March 15, 2022

Certified trichologist and Advanced Trichology founder William Gaunitz, FWTS, has done an extensive amount of research on alkaline water and hair growth. So when SHAPE asked him about this new trend involving Cardi B, he was ready with an answer.

To get straight to the point, the answer is yes, alkaline water can absolutely help your hair.

Alkaline water assists in negating the impacts of acidic actions that your body undergoes. Every day, a majority of the food or drinks you consume are considered acidic. This makes our bodies more acidic, resulting in our bodies trying to neutralize the acid to maintain the desired pH of 7.3. Since our bodies only have so many alkalized minerals, they often resort to stealing those minerals from other organs that need them. In the case of the hair, this can cause inflammation, directly impacting the hair growth cycle.

Some of the alkalizing minerals our body uses are calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. These minerals can also be found in alkaline water. By drinking alkaline water, you are fueling your body with enough alkaline minerals to be used in neutralizing the acids you consume, without having to take from other organs that need them, leaving your hair able to thrive uninterrupted.

If you needed a sign to switch from regular water to alkaline water, then this is it!
