What is a Trichologist?

How to find a good trichologist (and what to expect)

1) Know what a trichologist is.
A trichologist is a scientist of the hair and scalp who works exclusively with hair loss and scalp conditions. In the U.S., trichology can be “just a certificate,” so you need to vet who you’re trusting.

2) Know what a typical dermatologist visit looks like (for hair loss).
A common experience is waiting to get in, a short appointment, and prescriptions like finasteride, oral minoxidil, topical minoxidil, and sometimes spironolactone (for females).

3) Know what to expect from a good trichologist appointment.
A good trichologist should sit you down, take a patient history, ask what you’ve been using, examine your scalp under a microscope, and make recommendations. You should typically return in 6–8 weeks for another microscopic analysis to see how things are growing, and you should document progress with before photos.

4) Know how to vet credentials and track record.
Ask how long they’ve been in practice. Ask to see before-and-after results. Check their Better Business Bureau rating. Look for membership in legitimate organizations—such as WTS (or FWTS), IAT, and certain European organizations with initials like IOT and MIT.

5) Know what results to expect (and when).
You should expect results under the microscope, and visible results over time—often around 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months—with before-and-after photos that clearly show progress. You should also expect honesty if success isn’t realistic (for example, when there isn’t hair under the microscope and a hair transplant may be needed).
