Scalp Massages That Actually Work For Hair Growth

This video answers a common question: does scalp massage do anything for hair growth, and if it does, what scalp massage actually works. William Gaunitz explains that most scalp massage tools (rubber/plastic/metal “gadgets”) don’t do much because they aren’t truly manipulating the scalp and they aren’t getting to where hair grows—the dermal layer. He notes that rubbing the surface (the epidermis) may clean the scalp, but it isn’t the same thing as a real scalp massage for growth.

The massage technique he recommends is what he calls a “scalp over skull” massage—physically moving the scalp over the skull. He describes this as a best-practice routine to do daily, typically about 60 to 90 seconds (he also mentions “about 1 minute, maybe 90 seconds”), ideally before applying a topical formula at night. He also says you can do it right before a shower, since shampooing then helps clean the surface of the scalp as well.

He demonstrates the method:

  • Use the palms of your hands

  • Push down on the surface of the scalp

  • Move the scalp over the skull, physically moving the tissue over the fascia

  • Do this for 60–90 seconds daily

He explains that doing this can improve circulation, help you get the best results out of your hair growth treatment, and can be a useful tool if you’re trying to prevent hair loss. He also adds that after doing the scalp-over-skull massage, applying a topical formula directly to the areas of loss and massaging it in helps maximize the efficiency of the routine. He mentions that he has seen people slow or stop hair loss in some cases, and that some people—especially those with inflammation—may need that scalp massage.
