Can Hair Loss Be Prevented or Reversed?

December 07, 2022

According to Advanced Trichology founder and certified trichologist William Gaunitz, FWTS…it can!

That being said, treatment will be specific to your specific type of hair loss (read this refresher on Hair Loss 101).

The key to preventing hair loss in general is making sure that all three reasons for plausible hair loss have been mitigated. If you have a family history of hair loss and are above 35 years of age you should be looking for signs of genetic hair loss, sitting in the temple region or through the middle vertex, or through the crown.

Nutritional hair loss, nutritional alopecia, is the easiest to prevent by making sure you have the appropriate blood tests and making sure that you have optimal levels in your blood of those key nutrients. Specific ranges for the most critical items are to be:

    • Ferritin at least 60 ng/mL
    • Vitamin D3 is preferably between 60 to 80 ng/mL

Our FoliGROWTH is a great option for nutritional alopecia. If you are a menstruating female, have PCOS, or are a vegan or vegetarian, additional blood work should be considered to rule out a more aggressive iron and ferritin issue.

For hormonal-related hair loss, the best way to prevent it is to manage the amount of DHT impacting a hair follicle. This can be done topically and internally with our DHT Blocker with Immune Support and NutraM Revitalizing Scalp Serum.

Inflammatory hair loss is the most challenging: it is clinically shown in numerous papers that you can protect yourself from alopecia areata and telogen effluvium by having both ferritin and vitamin D3 in the optimal ranges. However numerous other reasons for inflammatory hair loss can cause the loss to be managed at a higher level, including with dietary changes, and adding supplements like the EFA Complete which includes omega-3 and 9 that have been shown to reduce overall information in the body. Additionally ensuring that your scalp is clean and using the proper shampoo and conditioner as well as making sure your gut health is at an optimal level will all assist in this type of hair loss.
